Blythe’s newest family member is “Middie”, size wise (20cm) in between the original Blythe and the Petite Blythe. Pics of the first girl, Ada I believe she’s called, was posted yesterday:

Middie Blythe is not too big, not too small.
She’s “Just Right”!
She is a new concept doll which has very special charm.
She is called “Middie” because her size is in between Neo and Petite, but it spells “Middie” instead of “Midi” so it sounds like a cute girl’s name.
Her features are more childish than Neo but more mature than Petite.
Her head is table to tilt to the left or the right with eye move technology enhancing her charming gaze!

From what I’ve understood, she doesn’t have the traditional color changing eyes, but one set of eyes which can move from side to side (like we’re familiar with from Pullips). Seems as her head can tilt too – again, something anyone who’s obitsued a Pullip not to mention Dal is familiar with; intended or not.. ;)

I am frankly not smitten at all. She’s way too plain and cute – Blythe are about quirkiness, not cuteness. We’ve got Pullips for that!

In addition to my three Blythe, I also have a CCE (color changing eyes) doll and a Basaak doll. Here are some comparison pictures for those of you who consider getting a clone. I definitely recommend the Basaak over a CCE doll..!

Rooting
The CCE (to the left) is rooted in 6 even circles around the inside of the scalp, while the Basaak has 2 more rows (meaning they’re closer and the hair appears fuller), and also has a different pattern where the front of the hair is. The Basaak wins this “duel” by a mile..! A note also, that I broke the inner ring of the scalp when trying to remove the CCE scalp, while the Basaak scalp popped off just like that.

Bodies
The CCE doll has several flaws in the soft plastic legs (chips of a clear plastic inserted into it), you can see a closeup of that here (click on the photo if it shrinks in your browser). You can also see that there’s a mismatch of the front and back plates of the CCE head – even more noticable in the pic I linked above – but I believe that’s fixable. The Basaak body is quite similar to the Blythe original body, the CCE body is waaaay slimmer:

Posing
Blythe can not turn her arms outwards, CCE wins that duel:

Blythe is however the only doll who can bend her knees properly. I tried really hard to bend the other dolls’ knees, with no luck:

The CCE dolls have fairly downwards facing heads, they’re hard to photograph because of it. Here’s Bee in a Mimiwoo wig, a Sugarmag sweater, Blythe Star Dancer stock top, and Only Hearts Club pants:

I obitsued the Basaak doll, and love the way it turned out! I did have to work a bit on the body, it’s a 25 cm obitsu and they are soft bust – to make it sturdy enough for the big head and the heavy scalp I stuffed craft foam inside the torso and around the neck inside the soft vinyl shell (from underneath). I also put two small pieces of craft foam in between the neck peg and the inside of the head. Dressed in a Liv doll top, Coolcat tights, Mimiwoo sneakers, and I forgot where the hat’s from:

I’ve been pondering whether to get a Blythe, but decided I don’t like any of the default ones enough to shell out the money for one (after all, you can get BJDs for that kind of money.. ;) ). Then recently, I found a “cheap” merchant on eBay ($70 a doll, Ashton Drake), and played with the thought of getting a doll to customize. However, before I got around to that, cutsiedotnet made me aware of the Blythe replicas called Color Changing Eyes dolls. I just won an auction this evening, and will have this girl coming my way soon:

- or a similar one, as they state that the outfit might not be the same as on the pic… I actually rather hope it will be either the one to the far right or the one to the left on this pic. (Edited a few hours later: the seller has promised to send me the red-and-black haired one..!) Now to look for eyes, rerooting tutorials (I don’t see myself doing that anytime soon, though), and prepare for some heavy faceup modifications! My can of Mr Super Clear flat is ready!

In other doll related news, the Moxies have made it to Norway! I am not getting any, they are way too expensive (US$35 and up for the basic ones). That’s Norwegian toy prices for you, yay for eBay..! I did score a Bratz doll today, though – I got a Cloe rock star for $17 (which is below 50% of her normal selling price here). Poor girl will have her clothes harvested and instruments taken from her, and be handed to a 5 year old tomorrow. ;)
